The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended two former principal officers after an investigation found them guilty of misconduct.
At Tuesday’s plenary in Makurdi, the House agreed to suspend a former Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), for six months and a former Minority Leader, Michael Audu (PDP/Adoka-Ugboju), for three months.
The decision came after the Majority Leader, Thomas Dugeri (APC/Kwande West), presented the findings of an ad hoc committee set up to review the actions of the former leadership. He said the committee discovered that both lawmakers used their positions for personal benefit, which he described as a serious breach of the oaths they swore to uphold.
Dugeri added that the Assembly must enforce discipline to protect its integrity and ensure that members remain accountable.
Supporting the motion, Elias Audu (APC/Gwer East) warned that indiscipline within the legislature could affect the stability of the state. He called for a special committee to work with the Ethics Committee to further examine the matter.
Speaker Alfred Emberga, in his ruling, approved the suspensions and said the action should serve as a warning to other members.
