The Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking via video link at a Saudi-hosted global forum on tourism and investment on Tuesday, the Al Nassr forward revealed that he plans to retire from professional football within the next “one or two years.”
“Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment,” Ronaldo said when asked if the 2026 World Cup—set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, would be his last.
The 40-year-old, who continues to perform at an elite level in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League, admitted that he is cherishing every moment of his illustrious career.
“Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking. I’m really enjoying the moment right now. As you know, in football, when you reach a certain age, you count the months very quickly,” he said.
“I feel very good at this moment. I score goals, and I still feel quick and sharp. I’m enjoying my game in the national team. But of course, let’s be honest, when I say soon, it’s probably one or two years. I’ll still be in the game. Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old (at the World Cup).”
“I gave everything for football. I’ve been in the game for the last 25 years. I did everything; I have many records in different scenarios at clubs and also with the national team. I’m really proud. So let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment.”
A victory against Ireland in Thursday’s World Cup qualifiers would guarantee Portugal’s qualification, paving the way for Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner came closest to lifting the trophy in 2006, when Portugal lost to France in the semi-finals in Germany.
Ronaldo, who has scored over 950 career goals for club and country, remains one of the most decorated players in football history with multiple Champions League, Euro Championship, and domestic league titles to his name.
