President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a civilian led operational structure while the military will continue to provide security for corps members across the country.
To ensure the reforms take effect, the President directed the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.
Under the new reforms, the NYSC will adopt a technology driven call up process and a risk sensitive deployment system to enhance the safety of corps members.
The six week orientation programme will also be redesigned to focus more on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career development.
The reforms also include skills based primary assignments that align with graduates' academic backgrounds, improved camp standards through a national grading and certification system, a new graduation ceremony to replace the Passing Out Parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform to promote professionalism and national pride.
