President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement issued by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Prof. Ogundipe succeeds Prof. Olufemi Aina, who stepped down from the position less than a year ago. The Presidency said the appointment reflects the administration's commitment to strengthening Nigeria's higher education sector through improved quality, access, integrity, and global competitiveness.
A renowned academic and botanist, Prof. Ogundipe holds a doctorate in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from University of Lagos. He served as Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG between 2017 and 2022 and is currently Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer's University.
The 66-year-old scholar is also a member of several professional bodies and is widely recognised for his contributions to research, academic administration, and educational development in Nigeria.
The federal government expressed confidence that his wealth of experience will further enhance leadership, stability, and innovation within the nation's university system.
