NYSC remains key to national unity since Civil War — DG Nafiu

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has said the scheme has remained a key driver of national unity since its establishment after the Nigerian Civil War.

He stated this on Sunday during an interview with journalists in Abuja, noting that the NYSC was created as part of post-war efforts to rebuild the country through reconciliation and integration.

Nafiu explained that the deliberate deployment of graduates to states outside their regions of origin was designed to promote cultural exposure, mutual understanding, and national cohesion.

According to him, the scheme has enabled many young Nigerians to experience diverse cultures, build inter-ethnic relationships, and in some cases, form marriages that further strengthen national unity.

He said the NYSC, which began in 1973 with about 2,364 corps members, now mobilises over 400,000 graduates annually, reflecting its growth and relevance over the years.

While acknowledging existing challenges to national unity, Nafiu maintained that the scheme remains one of the most important platforms for integration and youth development in the country.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the NYSC to sustaining unity and preparing young Nigerians for leadership and national development.
