Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has withdrawn from the race for the governorship ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The decision was announced on Wednesday night in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, ending weeks of speculation over the governor’s political future.
The report has it that Fubara decided to step down after concluding that he stood little chance of securing the party’s ticket.
His ambition was said to have been dealt a major blow after his estranged political ally and former benefactor, Nyesom Wike, backed another aspirant for the APC ticket.
Fubara and Wike have been at loggerheads for months over the control of the political structure in Rivers State.
The governor’s withdrawal comes a day before the APC is scheduled to hold its governorship primaries across the country.
