Kanu Highlights Challenges, Opportunities in Nigeria’s Shipping Industry

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Europa International Limited Shipping Agency, Mr. Bright Kanu, has identified both the challenges and growth opportunities in Nigeria’s shipping industry, calling for stronger compliance with international standards to enhance global competitiveness.

Mr. Kanu stated this during a telephone interview with the Edunright Media correspondents on Tuesday, where he spoke extensively on the realities of the maritime sector and the need for continuous adaptation.

Speaking on what inspired him, the shipping expert said his passion for the sea and global trade motivated him to venture into the business. “I have always been drawn to the sea and the idea of connecting people and goods across the world,” he noted.

He explained that handling disputes in trade transactions demands diplomacy and negotiation skills, adding that effective communication and a sound knowledge of contracts and international regulations are essential for resolving conflicts efficiently.

Mr. Kanu further stressed the importance of keeping up with emerging international trade laws, shipping technologies, and market trends, noting that staying informed remains vital for competitiveness in the maritime industry.

He also emphasized that clear communication between suppliers and customs brokers is critical for smooth operations. According to him, maintaining transparency, providing regular updates, and building strong relationships with partners can help prevent unnecessary delays.

Kanu commended Nigeria’s shipping regulatory agencies for their efforts in enforcing safety and environmental policies. He also lauded the government’s continued support for the agencies in ensuring operational efficiency.

The CEO urged operators to adhere to international conventions such as the Marine Pollution (MARPOL) and the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), saying they are essential to protecting the environment and safeguarding crew welfare.

He maintained that innovation and flexibility are key to navigating the fast-changing dynamics of the maritime industry. “The maritime industry is constantly evolving, and we must be proactive and innovative in addressing challenges while taking advantage of new opportunities,” he added.
