Presidency Faults Atiku’s Criticism of Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has come under criticism from the Presidency over his assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Atiku’s comments were based on outdated 2024 economic data and failed to reflect the impact of the administration’s ongoing reforms.

According to the Presidency, the reforms were introduced to address long standing structural challenges in the economy and were never presented as painless measures. It maintained that the focus should be on the country’s economic size, revenue generation, debt sustainability, and the productive use of borrowed funds.

The Presidency also defended the Federal Government’s tax reforms, stating that the policies were designed to reduce the tax burden on low income earners and small businesses while improving compliance among high income individuals and profitable companies.

Responding to Atiku’s claims on oil revenue, the statement dismissed the allegation of an undisclosed oil windfall, insisting that any increase in oil earnings is reflected in monthly allocations distributed through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The Presidency further argued that Nigeria’s debt remains within sustainable limits and reiterated that the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms are aimed at achieving long term growth and fiscal stability.
