Lagos Govt Seals Shops for Illegal Waste Disposal in Yaba, Tejuosho

The Lagos State Government has sealed several shops along the Yaba-Tejuosho and Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridors for violating environmental sanitation laws and disposing of waste indiscriminately.

The enforcement exercise was carried out by the Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), with support from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, OP MESA and the Nigeria Police.

According to LAWMA, the affected areas include Kilani, Lisabi, Matthew, Pearce and Banjo streets. Many of the sealed shops, mostly occupied by fashion designers, tailors and clothing merchants, were accused of dumping textile waste on road medians and using illegal cart pushers to dispose of their waste.

The agency also said many of the businesses had failed to use their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for waste collection for about five years, despite repeated warnings and sensitisation.

LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the exercise was to ensure compliance with environmental laws and promote a cleaner Lagos.

He urged residents and business owners to dispose of their waste properly through approved PSP operators, adding that the affected shops would remain sealed until they met the required sanitation standards.
