The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has announced plans to introduce new broadcasting standards aimed at addressing ethical concerns arising from the rapid growth of digital broadcasting platforms and emerging technologies.
The Director-General of the NBC, Charles Ebuebu, disclosed this during an interview with journalists in Abuja. He said the move became necessary as digital platforms, online streaming services, podcasts, and IPTV continue to reshape the broadcasting industry.
Ebuebu said the proposed standards will be integrated into the Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme recently launched by the Federal Government. He noted that the commission had engaged media stakeholders, including editors, to ensure the new regulations reflect current realities, particularly as the country prepares for future elections.
He urged broadcasters to continue complying with the existing NBC Code, warning that violations would be addressed through established regulatory procedures, including warnings, consultations, and sanctions where necessary.
The NBC boss also revealed that the commission is reviewing its broadcast code, operational framework, and service standards. He added that another stakeholders' meeting would be held before the revised code is submitted to the Minister of Information and National Orientation for approval.
