Army chief assures Nigerians of progress in rescue of abducted Oyo pupils, teachers

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has assured Nigerians that troops are making steady progress in efforts to rescue the 39 pupils and seven teachers abducted from three schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15.

Shaibu gave the assurance on Saturday in Port Harcourt during an interactive session with media executives held as part of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration. He expressed confidence that the victims would be rescued safely and reunited with their families.

The army chief said troops have continued to record successes in operations across the country, including the fight against insurgency, banditry and other security threats. He noted that security has improved in several parts of the country due to sustained military operations.

He also disclosed that the Federal Government has approved measures to strengthen the Nigerian Army by increasing manpower, improving training and providing modern military equipment to enhance its operational effectiveness across the country.
