The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Enugu State has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to secure the release of teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State and strengthen safety in schools across the country.
The union made the call on Tuesday during a peaceful solidarity protest in Enugu over rising insecurity affecting schools and education workers nationwide.
Speaking during the protest, the Enugu NUT Chairman, Theophilus Odo, said the action was not directed at the state government but was meant to show solidarity with victims of insecurity in other parts of the country.
He commended Governor Peter Mbah for efforts to improve security in Enugu State, noting that teachers currently operate in a safer environment.
Odo expressed concern over the abduction of a school principal, teachers, and pupils in Oyo State on May 15, saying one teacher was killed while another was seriously affected during the incident. He urged urgent action to secure the release of the victims and prevent further attacks on schools.
The Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, described the incident as unfortunate and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He said the concerns raised by the teachers would be conveyed to relevant authorities at the national level and reiterated the state’s investment in security.
Onyia also commended teachers for their support of ongoing education reforms in the state, including the Smart Green School initiative.
