A social critic and activist, Henry Shield, on Tuesday staged a one man protest at the United Nations office in Abuja, calling for international intervention to secure the release of schoolchildren and staff abducted in Oyo State.
Shield, who shared photos of the protest on social media, stood in front of the UN office with a banner that read, “Our children should not sleep in kidnappers’ den.”
He said he submitted a letter to the UN office and also wrote to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, urging the organisation to support efforts to rescue the victims and ensure their safe return.
In his appeal, Shield expressed concern over the continued captivity of the children and their teachers, describing the situation as a violation of their fundamental rights.
The protest comes amid growing public concern over the abduction of 46 schoolchildren and staff from Esienle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15. The victims have remained in captivity for more than two weeks.
