Political battle looms in Rivers State as Fubara, Wike loyalists pick governorship forms

A fresh political tension is emerging in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 governorship election as allies of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike intensify moves over succession plans.

The development is raising concern over the peace deal earlier brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which was meant to calm political tensions in the state.

Last week, allies of Governor Fubara led by Rep. Awaji-Inombek Abiante reportedly picked governorship forms for him, sparking fresh political debate in the state.

In response, allies of Wike have also entered the race. Dr. Dax George-Kelly and Rep. Kingsley Chinda picked forms on the platforms of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party respectively.

Also in the race is Tonye Cole, who says he will not step down for any candidate.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Fubara is strengthening his support in the state House of Assembly, with loyalists positioned across 32 constituencies ahead of the election.

The situation has raised fears of renewed political tension, with talk of possible impeachment moves when the Rivers State House of Assembly resumes.

Despite the tension, some political observers believe Fubara still has strong support within the APC. However, Wike is said to remain influential in shaping the 2027 governorship race in the state.
