Attacks On Nigerians In South Africa: FG Summons Envoy

The Federal Government has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner over renewed attacks on Nigerian residents and their businesses in the country.

The envoy is expected to meet with officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Monday, May 4, as Nigeria moves to address the alleged mistreatment of its citizens and the rising hostility against their business interests in South Africa.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made this known in a statement issued on Saturday through the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the minister, the meeting is intended to formally express Nigeria’s deep concern over recent developments which could affect the cordial relationship between both countries.

She explained that discussions would focus on the ongoing demonstrations by some groups in South Africa, alongside documented cases of harassment, intimidation and attacks against Nigerian citizens and their businesses.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the ministry was aware of the growing concern among Nigerians over the treatment of their fellow citizens in South Africa.

She, however, appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting the rights, safety and welfare of Nigerians living in the country.

She added that Nigeria would continue to pursue diplomatic means to ensure the protection of its citizens and prevent further threats to their well-being.
