President Tinubu replaces Egbetokun with Disu as Police IG

President Bola Tinubu has asked Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to step down and appointed Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu as his replacement.

Sources close to the Presidency said the decision was made after a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening, during which Egbetokun was asked to submit his resignation. The move is part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s security ahead of the 2027 general elections. A formal announcement is expected soon.

Disu, currently heading the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Lagos, has previously served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

He was also Principal Staff Officer to Egbetokun and led both the Intelligence Response Team in Abuja and the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos. He is widely regarded in police circles for his professionalism and operational efficiency.

Born on April 13, 1966, Disu holds a degree in English Education from Lagos State University, a diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies, a Master’s in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, and a Master’s in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992 after training at the Nigeria Police Academy. Egbetokun’s tenure had attracted controversy, particularly because he remained in office beyond his official retirement age in September 2024.

Activist Omoyele Sowore publicly criticised the extension. Officials said Disu’s appointment signals a fresh attempt to strengthen the country’s security leadership.
