The University of Gambia has renamed its School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in honour of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, former president of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
President Adama Barrow unveiled a plaque on Wednesday, formally designating it the Dr. Akinwumi Adesina School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The university said the renaming aims to inspire students to emulate Adesina’s vision and commitment to Africa’s development.
Dr. Adesina, who led AfDB from 2015 to 2025, introduced the High 5s agenda, improving energy, agriculture, trade, industry, and quality of life for over 535 million Africans. He also spearheaded the Feed Africa Strategy, boosting food security for more than 104 million people.
In The Gambia, the bank financed the Senegambia Bridge, easing travel to Senegal and boosting trade. Dr. Adesina described the honour as “exceptional” and expressed deep gratitude.
