NYSC DG urges corps members to respect host communities’ culture

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on corps members to respect the culture, traditions, and values of their host communities.

He gave the charge while addressing corps members during a visit to the NYSC orientation camp in Issele-Uku, near Asaba, on Thursday.

According to him, embracing and understanding the customs of host communities will help corps members project themselves as responsible citizens and good ambassadors of Nigeria in the future.

He noted that many corps members were deliberately posted outside their states and geopolitical zones to promote national integration and foster a better understanding of Nigeria’s diverse cultures.

“You are expected to respect the culture of the state and your host communities. Make efforts to understand and appreciate their values and traditions,” he said.

The NYSC boss also emphasised the importance of discipline, urging corps members to abide strictly by the rules and regulations governing the scheme.

“In the NYSC, there are consequences for violating laid-down rules. You are expected to follow the scheme’s guidelines at all times,” he warned.

Brig.-Gen. Nafiu further encouraged corps members to develop a culture of saving, noting that government support alone may not be sufficient to meet all their needs.

He explained that consistent monthly savings of ₦15,000 over 10 months could amount to ₦150,000, which, when combined with the final allowance payment, could provide startup capital for small businesses.

“With proper savings, you can gather up to ₦300,000, which can be used to start a small venture such as a barbering or tailoring business,” he said.

He also advised corps members to avoid travelling at night to reduce the risk of road accidents and criminal activities, assuring them that the NYSC is working closely with security agencies to ensure their safety throughout the service year.
