Nigerian Govt Clarifies Report on Tinubu’s Alleged Meeting with U.S. Vice President

The Nigerian government has clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no scheduled meeting with United States Vice President J.D. Vance.

Temitope Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, described the report making the rounds online as false and misleading.

In a post on his official X handle on Monday, Ajayi said the claim was fabricated and had led to unnecessary speculation. He added that if President Tinubu were to visit the White House, he would meet U.S. President Donald Trump, not his Vice President.

“There’s a story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true,” Ajayi wrote. “If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President.”

The clarification came after online reports claimed Tinubu was planning a U.S. visit for “high-level engagements” following a controversial post by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening possible action over alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Responding, the Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to ending terrorism and protecting citizens of all faiths.

President Tinubu also stressed that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and that his administration continues to work with both Christian and Muslim leaders to promote peace and unity.

“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” he said.
