FG to replace NYSC Khaki Uniform with Adire as part of major reforms

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with Adire fabric as part of the newly approved reforms for the scheme.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made this known on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief. He said the move is aimed at promoting locally made products and supporting Nigeria's textile industry.

According to the minister, the Adire fabric will be produced by local textile manufacturers, including those in Ogun and Kwara states, to boost indigenous production and create more economic opportunities.

Olawande also disclosed that corps members will now be posted according to their academic qualifications and career paths. He explained that graduates trained as teachers, for instance, will receive relevant training during the orientation camp before being deployed to schools.

Speaking on security, the minister said the government is reviewing the deployment policy to allow more corps members to serve in states where they studied or are familiar with the environment, especially in areas facing security challenges. He noted that the new approach is expected to reduce redeployment requests and improve the effectiveness of the scheme.

He also dismissed reports that the military would be removed from the NYSC, stressing that the military will continue to provide security and support, while the scheme's operational leadership will be headed by civilians.

As part of the reforms, the orientation camp will now last six weeks instead of three, with greater focus on entrepreneurship, vocational skills, civic responsibility and employability.

President Bola Tinubu said the reforms are intended to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and prepare them to contribute more effectively to national development.
