Ibadan Residents Protest Over Abduction Of Pupils, Teachers, Threaten Election Boycott

The residents of Ibadan on Monday staged a protest over the continued captivity of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The protesters, led by the Oyo State chapter of the Take-It-Back Movement, marched from Mokola Roundabout to Agodi Gate, with parents, students, and concerned residents joining the demonstration.

They carried placards with messages calling for the safe return of the victims and demanding improved security across the country. Many of them expressed frustration over the delay in rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers.

One of the protesters, Mrs. Esther Olowookere, said families are living in fear due to the situation, adding that citizens may reconsider participating in future elections if the government fails to act quickly and secure the release of the victims.

Another protester, Soneye AbdulAzeez, said the rise in insecurity is linked to economic hardship and unemployment, noting that many vulnerable youths can easily be recruited into criminal activities. He called on government to address both security and economic challenges.

The protesters later moved towards the Oyo State Government Secretariat to continue their demonstration.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier advised against the protest, saying it could worsen tensions and give advantage to criminal elements. He, however, assured that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the abducted victims.

The pupils and teachers were kidnapped on May 15 in Oriire LGA, sparking widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger security in schools and communities.
