The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State on Saturday announced that its ward and local government congresses were successfully conducted across all 20 LGAs, with new executives emerging through consensus.
Chairman of the APC Ward and LGA Congress Committee, Mr Karounwi Oladapo, spoke with journalists in Kosofe after monitoring the exercise in Ojo and Surulere. He described the exercise as orderly and fully in line with the party constitution and the Electoral Act.
Oladapo said the screening and monitoring committees sent from the party’s national secretariat carried out their duties diligently, resolving most issues before the exercise began. This allowed new executives to emerge through consensus, with affirmations conducted according to party rules.
“The exercise was a resounding success. Party leaders and delegates conducted themselves peacefully and maturely. I have not seen any congress as peaceful as what we witnessed in Lagos State,” he said.
He urged the newly elected ward and LGA executives to maintain party unity and strengthen its structure.
“What has been handed over to them is a strong and united party that continues to deliver electoral victories. They must build on it and ensure even greater successes,” Oladapo added.
Lagos State APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, commended party leaders for their conduct and urged LGA chairmen to bring members together and grow the party.
At the congresses, 55 delegates in Ojo, 142 in Surulere, and 50 in Kosofe affirmed the election of 27 executives in their respective areas. The same consensus arrangement was applied in all other LGAs.
Correspondents in Ifako-Ijaiye and Agege reported that the process was peaceful and non-violent. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch, were present to maintain order. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission also monitored the exercise.
The immediate past Chairman of Agege LGA, Ganiyu Egunjobi, praised the party leadership for organising a peaceful congress.
