Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the appointment of retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Dr Muhammad Dalijan, as the new Commandant of the Community Protection Guards (CPG).
The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada. He said the appointment takes immediate effect.
Dr Dalijan served as Commissioner of Police in Zamfara between 2023 and 2025 before he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police. Until his retirement in June 2025, he was the AIG in charge of Counter-Terrorism at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the statement, the appointment is part of Governor Lawal’s efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture and improve the effectiveness of the Community Protection Guards.
The governor also ordered a comprehensive overhaul of the CPG to address operational and administrative challenges affecting its performance.
Dr Dalijan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as well as Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Criminology from the University of Abuja.
Governor Lawal said the new commandant’s experience as the immediate past Commissioner of Police in Zamfara has given him a deep understanding of the state’s security challenges and terrain, which will help him reposition the CPG to deliver on its mandate.
The governor also commended the immediate past commandant for his service to the state, wished him a speedy recovery, and assured him of the government’s continued support.
