The Nigerian government has confirmed that the United States carried out military air strikes against terrorists in the country’s north west on Thursday.
In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said the strikes were part of ongoing security and intelligence cooperation with the US and were carefully targeted at terrorist hideouts.
The statement warned that violent extremists will no longer find safe havens in any part of Nigeria, describing their actions as an affront to the nation’s values.
“Cooperation between Nigeria and the US has led to precise strikes on terrorist targets in the North West,” the statement read. “This partnership involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and support in line with international law, respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.”
The government stressed that all counter-terrorism efforts focus on protecting civilians, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity.
Nigeria continues to work with international partners to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen its security institutions.
US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the air strikes were successful, while the US Department of Defense confirmed the operation, warning that more strikes may follow due to terrorists’ continued attacks on civilians.
