The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised political parties in Osun State to ensure their governorship primaries are conducted in line with the law as preparations continue for the 2026 election.
In a statement on Monday, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, reminded parties of the need to follow the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s guidelines when selecting their candidates. The governorship election is scheduled for August 8, 2026.
Agboke noted that many pre-election disputes come from poorly organised primaries and stressed that transparent, fair and peaceful exercises are key to avoiding unnecessary litigations. He urged parties to provide equal opportunities for all aspirants and ensure that the process truly reflects the choices of their members.
INEC’s timetable shows that party primaries in Osun will hold between November 24 and December 15. Agboke said the commission is ready to guide and support all parties to ensure full compliance.
He also called on security agencies and other stakeholders to work with INEC to ensure peaceful primaries, adding that the commission will take action against any party that fails to follow electoral rules.
