PDP Insists Convention Will Hold Saturday Despite Legal Tussles

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has restated that the party’s national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan will go ahead as planned, despite internal disagreements and ongoing court cases.

The BoT chairman, Adolphus Wabara, made this known on Thursday in Abuja after receiving the report of the PDP Reconciliation Committee. He explained that all major organs of the party had already agreed on proceeding with the convention.

Wabara said the decision is supported by an existing Supreme Court judgment which, in his view, should guide lower courts currently handling related matters.

He told journalists that the Governors Forum, the National Working Committee and the BoT had all endorsed the plan for the convention. He added that the PDP would obey any contrary court order if one eventually comes, noting that the party has always respected the rule of law.

Wabara dismissed the impression that the party was in crisis, describing the situation instead as internal disagreements fueled by personal political ambitions. He suggested that some individuals were positioning themselves ahead of the 2031 election cycle and were attempting to weaken the party for their future advantage.

He also explained that the BoT began reconciliation efforts shortly after the 2023 elections but progress was slow due to limited resources.

According to him, his interest is in keeping the PDP strong and united, not in seeking any elective position.

Reconciliation Committee chairman Adamu said the task given to the committee was demanding, but they were able to gather useful views from a wide range of stakeholders.

The committee’s secretary, Mike Oghiadomhe, confirmed that they met with key figures including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and members of the PDP Governors Forum. They also interacted with suspended national officers such as National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.

The committee further consulted former Senate President Bukola Saraki to ensure broad input.

Oghiadomhe said the recommendations submitted were designed to support a peaceful and well-organised convention.
