NURTW Raises Concern Over Rising Fuel, Transportation Costs

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has raised concerns over the rising price of petrol and its impact on transportation costs across the country.

The NURTW Chairman, Ikole-Ekiti Unit, Tajudeen Ojo, expressed the concern while speaking with journalists on Saturday in Ikole-Ekiti.

Ojo said petrol was being sold for about ₦1,400 per litre at some filling stations in Ekiti, adding that the increase had made it more expensive for commercial transport operators to run their businesses.

He explained that transporters were spending more on fuel, vehicle maintenance and spare parts, making it difficult to maintain existing fares without operating at a loss.

According to him, the rising cost of transportation was affecting both transport operators and commuters, many of whom were already struggling with the high prices of food and other essential goods.

Ojo called on the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to consider measures that could help stabilise petrol prices and reduce the pressure on transport operators and passengers.

He also appealed to transport operators to be considerate when reviewing fares, noting that commuters were equally facing economic difficulties.

He said reducing transportation costs would help ease the financial burden on Nigerians and reduce the impact of rising prices of essential commodities.
